Activision Boasts Modern Warfare 2 with 2.5 million Sales Figures
Activision announced today that the recently released downloadable content (DLC) for Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has set new Xbox Live Sales record. More than 2.5 million Xbox Live users downloaded the DLC at $15 a download since its March 30 release.
The first success of Modern Warfare 2, released on November 14 last year, was that it sold astonishing 14 million copies across the world till date. Well, most of us knows this. Here comes one more milestone of this modern military shooter. The “Stimulus Package” map pack has been downloaded 1 million times in its first 24 hours of its availability nine days before. Till now it has been downloaded more than 2.5 million times.
The $15 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Map Pack, which broke a few Xbox Live DLC sales records, was originally planned for the June quarter, but was released early. One might speculate that the DLC was pushed up due to the then impending legal drama between publisher Activision and developer Infinity Ward.
Released by Activision and time-exclusive to the Xbox 360, the map pack is price tagged $15. It adds five multiplayer maps to MW2. That adds $37.5 million to the over $1 billion worldwide the game has already taken in. It is currently the 3rd best-selling game of all time in the US. A second map pack was announced with the first map pack, but no dates have been mentioned. The DLC, dubbed the “Stimulus Package,” features three new maps, as well as two maps form Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2.
World of Warcraft sales beating expectations is good news for Blizzard as new subscriptions have been slowing for the company's insanely popular MMORPG. A second map pack for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is being developed by (those left at) Infinity Ward. The first map pack is currently available on the Xbox 360, but will be released on the PC and PlayStation 3 in May.
