NetEase's World of Warcraft in China Has Suspended New User Registrations
NetEase, China's third-largest online game operator, said it has suspended new user registration for World of Warcraft in China, and will reapply for a licence to operate the expansion pack of Activision Blizzard's hit game.
According to Reuters, NetEase has decided to re-apply to the General Administration of Press and Publication for a license to operate The Burning Crusade, and will disallow new registrations for a week from Monday, ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday in China.
"We recently submitted our application to operate World of Warcraft (The Burning Crusade) to the General Administration of Press and Publication for review," the company said.
According to Beijing-based research firm iResearch, China has more than 80 million online gamers, who generated gaming revenue of $4 billion (2.57 billion pounds) in 2009.
China’s press and publication administration said on Nov. 2 that NetEase had “seriously violated” online games regulations in China by offering the World of Warcraft without its authorization. The Ministry of Culture countered by saying on Nov. 3 that it has oversight of the online games industry in China and has granted NetEase approval for the game. As we all know, China's Ministry of Culture approved firstly WoW's relaunch in September 2009. NetEase has always maintained it never violated any regulations.
