World of Warcraft Mount Celestial Steed Earns BILLIONS
Thousands of World of Warcraft players are getting around Azeroth in style today. Blizzard offered up the Lil' XT pet and the Celestial Steed mount yesterday, and at one point, the queue to download the virtual critters topped 140,000 people. For virtual items to be going so fast and furious is unheard of.
Blizzard has long been in the practice of selling “pets,” which are ornamental creatures that follow players around the gameworld. But the Celestial Steed is the first “mount” which going so fast and furious.
Several bloggers, including Mike Sellers at Terra Nova and Christian Witka at VGChartz, have been observing the queue of users attempting to purchase said Steeds, but their back-of-the-envelope calculations differ wildly. Sellers’ numbers indicate that the total stock of ponies should net Blizzard around $10 million, while Witka’s estimates range as high as $125 million.
Ok, billions is quite the exaggeration, but the limited edition World of WarCraft Mount did indeed make Blizzard and Activision an excessive amount of money. Costing each user $25, the World of WarCraft store had a queue of over 140,000 players waiting to buy the item at 7:30 PM last night. And that's after the mount had been available most of the day, already. A little calculator work will show that is a lot of money, with little overhead.
Now, Blizzard is adamant that they will not be introducing any gameplay-effecting items into their store, and thus far that has been true. The $25 mount will only allow you to do the things your previous mounts had already allowed to do. After selling out this Celestial Steed mount though, would you be surprised if Activision decided to change their mind?
Now the medium is buzzing about this high cost Celestial Steed. Is this a bad thing in your eyes? Hundreds of thousands of World of WarCraft players willing to spend $25 on horse armor, and with the growing popularity of this Celestial Steed,It could be more or less when you get in-line to buy one.
